It was the most played song of the year on pop radio and topped the charts at number 5. Since then Josh has toured with some of music’s biggest names including Taylor Swift\, Dave Matthews Band\, and Lady Antebellum. Josh has been in his studio for the past two years developing new music and his new record set to release in June of 2020. All of the songs to be released on the project were written by Josh and he also 2020 plans also include a US Spring tour to be followed by a 3 week European tour in the fall. Support acts are subject to change. \n—————————- \nAbout Drive-By Truckers: \nListen | Watch Video \nDrive-By Truckers is kicking off the new election year with The Unraveling\, our first new album in 3 1/2 years (the longest space between new DBT albums ever). Those years were among the most tumultuous our country has ever seen and the duality between the generally positive state of affairs within our band while watching so many things we care about being decimated and destroyed all around us informed the writing of this album to the core. \nWhile a quick glance might imply that we’re picking up where 2016’s American Band album left off\, the differences are as telling as the similarities. If the last one was a warning shot hinting at a coming storm\, this one was written in the wreckage and aftermath. I’ve always said that all of our records are political but I’ve also said that ‘politics IS personal’. With that in mind\, this album is especially personal. \nOur 2018 single “The Perilous Night” acted as a sort of coda to the polemic of the last album and the original plan was to zigzag in a different direction\, but alas the past few years have seen an uptick in school shootings\, church shootings\, racial violence\, suicides and overdoses\, border violence\, and an assault on so many things that we all hold dear. They’re literally putting children in cages. Writing silly love songs just seemed the height of privilege. \nMy partner Mike Cooley and I both worked through deep pools of writer’s block. How do you put these day to day things we’re all living through into the form of a song that we (much less anybody else) would ever want to listen to? How do you write about the daily absurdities when you can’t even wrap your head around them in the first place? I think our response was to focus at the core emotional level. More heart and less cerebral perhaps. \nEventually the songs did come\, some in mysterious ways. A day-long layover at an exit outside of Gillette\, Wyoming resulted in “21st Century USA”\, the song that for me opened up the floodgates\, enabling me to write my portion of the album. \nRecording in Memphis has been a life-long dream for this band. Both the city\, with its dark social history and amazing musical heritage\, and the studio which is a time machine set to its early 1960’s origins and inhabited by the spirit of its genus founder\, affected and inspired the creation of this album in ways that go far beyond the tangible and technical. \nSam Phillips left my hometown of Florence\, Alabama and moved to Memphis\, working in radio before opening the legendary Sun Studios (Memphis Recording Service) where he essentially discovered Rock and Roll\, recording the first records of Howlin’ Wolf\, Ike Turner\, Johnny Cash\, Carl Perkins\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Charlie Rich\, and of course Elvis Presley. When he sold Sun\, he built his dream lair\, the\, then state of the art Sam Phillips Recording Service which opened in 1962. If Phillips’ love of ‘slap-back’ echo had given those early Sun records their legendary sound\, his new studio incorporated three different echo chambers into its design\, giving the studio a very unique and wonderful sound that we incorporated into this album. \nI can’t impart enough the impact that recording there had on this album. We were all beyond inspired by the surroundings and the sounds coming out of the speakers from every playback or the sound of the echo chambers reverberating down the halls. Every day we got to hang out with Sam’s son Jerry who took us up to Mr. Phillips’ old office on the third floor. Unlocked in time\, it was still exactly as it had been the last day Sam spent there. His jackets still hanging in the closet and the bar still stocked with his favorite whiskey. There\, with Jerry\, we toasted our recordings and the spirits that still inhabited that sacred space. \nA few months later we reconvened in Athens\, Georgia at Barbe’s Chase Park Transduction studios where Matt and David mixed the album on Barbe’s vintage 1975 Neve console. As a band that got its start essentially making albums as field recordings on mobile gear\, it is indeed a treat to get to make our albums on 2” 16 tracks tape in historic studios and on beautiful vintage gear. We finished the process by having the legendary Greg Calbi master it all at Sterling Sound in Edgewater\, New Jersey. \nIn the end\, we whittled the album down to the nine songs included\, saving several key songs for a foundation to the next one that will hopefully occur sooner than later. Lilla Hood designed the packaging utilizing a stunning photo by Erik Golts of two young lads watching a sunset at the Oregon coast\, lettering by famed graphic artist Aaron Draplin\, and once again beautiful artwork from our long time collaborator Wes Freed. We plan on touring extensively throughout the next year taking these songs around the world. \nWe hope to see you there. \n– Patterson Hood \n\nAbout Ryley Walker: \nListen | Watch Video \nIt’s a good record. But I can’t really listen to it anymore. It kind of broke my brain. It took a year\, and there were a lot of times I thought it was going nowhere\, a lot of botched sessions. It was all my fault\, no one else’s. I was just totally unprepared. I went in with over-confidence\, I went in there like ‘Yeah\, I’m ready to go!’ but I was just kind of bullshitting. I went in expecting to make a fucking masterpiece\, but I kept hitting a brick wall. \nI was under a lot of stress because I was trying to make an anti-folk record and I was having trouble doing it. I wanted to make something deep-fried and more me-sounding. I didn’t want to be jammy acoustic guy anymore. I just wanted to make something weird and far-out that came from the heart finally. I was always trying to make something like this I guess\, trying to catch up with my imagination. And I think I succeeded in that way — it’s got some weird instrumentation on there\, and some surreal far-out words. \nAnd it’s more Chicago-y sounding. Chicago sounds like a train constantly coming towards you but never arriving. That’s the sound I hear\, all the time\, ringing in my ears. Everybody here’s always hustling. Everybody who talks to you on the street’s always got something they’re coming at you with. It’s the sound of strangers dodging one another. And landlords knocking on doors to get rent that people don’t have. But it’s eerily quiet at night. This record is the sound of walking home late at night through Chicago in the middle of winter and being half-creeped out\, scared someone’s going to punch you in the back of the head\, and half in the most tranquil state you’ve been in all day\, enjoying the quiet and this faint wind\, and buses going by on all-night routes. That’s the sound to tune in to. That’s the sound of Chicago to me. \nChicago. More than ever I’m just finding little details about it that I love. There’s so many weird twists about it: the way that street lights look here is really peculiar\, and a really bleak sense when you walk around. It looks gray\, there’s not a lot of color\, and I find a lot of radiance in that. And oh man it smells like diesel. And garbage cans. And in the summer when it really heats up it’s extra garbage-canny. And everything here looks like it’s about to break. It looks like it’s derelict. But that’s what I’m used to\, that’s what I like. The amount of imperfection in this city is really perfect. \nSo I’ve fallen in love with Chicago pretty hard over the past year\, despite crippling depression. I’ve realized I can’t not be in a city. I appreciate nature\, I appreciate driving through nature\, but you put me in a campsite for more than two days and I’ll flip the fuck out. I need to hear people outside of my window trying to buy crack. I need to be able to buy a taco at two in the morning. I need to hear the neighbors yelling really fucking loud at each other in the middle of the night. I need people. I need people really fucking bad. \nYou have to find calm in the city. You actively search for it. It’s not a la carte like it is in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. Which are beautiful\, they’re one of God’s finest creations — I’m not talking shit about the Rocky Mountains. But in the city it’s like scoring drugs\, you’ve got to score your tranquil situations. And that’s the sound of Chicago to me. \nThe songs don’t really deal with any political or personal or social issues at all. Mostly it just comes from being bummed out. And there’s not a lot of musical influences on the record. I wasn’t even listening to music when I made it. Last year was probably the least I’ve listened to music in my adult life. I mean I was listening to stuff in the van — I listened to a lot of Genesis records. I got really into Genesis. But there’s nothing else I could point to. Maybe I’d say it’s a record for coming up or coming down. It’s not an album for the middle of the day. It’s for the beginning or end of it. \nI quit drugs and booze recently. I got sick of being a party animal — I don’t want to be 19-gin-and-tonics-Ryley anymore. My brain is working a little better now\, but man I was just going at it pretty wildly\, and then trying to make a record while I was drinking\, it was kind of like torture. \nWe all had no idea what was going on\, every song we’d be like ‘What is this record?’ Because every song sounded different. In a way this record was working with everybody that I’ve worked with for years\, and it wasn’t like a Fleetwood Mac thing where everybody fell in love and divorced or anything\, but a lot of times we were butting heads in the studio. \nI hadn’t played any of the songs live ever\, whereas with my earlier records I’d play the shit out of them live and then go into the studio when they were totally cooked up and ready to go. But these songs were all half ideas and riffs I had on my mind\, so that held things up for a while. \nBeing meticulous and being deets-oriented is not my thing at all. I’ve never been like that. I’m kind of like go go go! Making a quick record is not hard\, it’s the easiest thing the world\, so working in this time frame\, over a year\, made me go kind of nuts and… oh\, tortured artist bullshit\, blah blah blah. But then last summer we started playing songs back to back and finally we started to hear a common thread running through the record. \nI’m lucky enough to have some people who are playing on it who had a big part in shaping the songs and writing with me. Cooper Crain\, the guy who engineered it\, and played all the synthesizers. And when the flute guy\, Nate Lepine came in\, that was really something that made it special. The producer was this guy LeRoy Bach. I love LeRoy\, he’s a really talented guy. He did the last record too. \nThe last record was cool but I was still figuring out what I was good at. But I’m fucking 28 years old\, I’ve got to figure out a sound\, figure out something that I enjoy doing. So this record is a little bit more grown-up. Ol’Ryley’s just workin’ on bein’ a better Ryley. \nI think more than anything the thing to take away from this record is that I appreciate what improv and jamming and that outlook on music has done for me\, but I wanted rigid structure for these songs. I don’t want to expand upon them live. There’s a looseness to some of the songs I guess\, but I didn’t want to rely on just hanging out on one note. It’s so straight-forward that I can see a lot of people really not liking it to be honest. But I’m so happy\, I’m happy that it’s completely different and unexpected. \nBut I know it’s divisive. It’s hard to talk about. It’s a weird record.

Support acts are subject to change. \n—————————- \nAbout Andy Shauf: \nListen | Watch Video \nFew artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based\, Saskatchewan-raised musician’s songs unfold like short fiction: they’re densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. On his new album The Neon Skyline (out January 24 viaANTI-)\, he sets a familiar scene of inviting a friend for beers on the opening title track: “I said\, ‘Come to the Skyline\, I’ll be washing my sins away.’ He just laughed\, said ‘I’ll belate\, you know how I can be.'” The LP’s 11 interconnected tracks follow a simple plot: the narrator goes to his neighborhood dive\, finds out his ex is back in town\, and she eventually shows up. While its overarching narrative is riveting\, the real thrill of the album comes from how Shauf finds the humanity and humor in a typical night out and the ashes of a past relationship. \nHis last full-length 2016’s The Party was an impressive collection of ornate and affecting songs that followed different attendees of a house party. Shauf’s attention-to-detail in his writing evoked Randy Newman and his unorthodox\, flowing lyrical phrasing recalled Joni Mitchell. Though that album was his breakthrough\, his undeniable songwriting talent has been long evident. Raised in Bienfait\, Saskatchewan\, he cut his teeth in the nearby Regina music community. His 2012 LP The Bearer of BadNews documented his already-formed musical ambition and showcased Shauf’sburgeoning voice as a narrative songwriter with songs like “HometownHero\,” “Wendell Walker\,” and “My Dear Helen” feeling like standalone\, self-contained worlds. In 2018\, his band Foxwarren\, formed over 10 years ago with childhood friends\, released a self-titled album where pitchfork recognized how “Shauf has diligently refined his storytelling during the last decade.” \nWith any album about a lost love\, the key ingredient is a generosity and kindness that can only come from a writer as empathic as Shauf. On the standout personality-filled single “Try Again\,” the narrator\, his friends\, and his ex find themselves at a new bar. The former lovers’ reunion is awkwardly funny and even sweet\, as he sings\,”Somewhere between drunkenness and charity\, she puts her hand on the sleeve of my coat. She says ‘I’ve missed this.’ I say “I know\, I’ve missed you too.” She says\, ‘I was actually talking about your coat.'” It’s a charming moment on a record filled with them. Shauf’s characters are all sympathetic here\, people who share countless inside jokes\, shots\, and life-or-death musings on things like reincarnation when the night gets hazy. \nOn top of heartbreak\, friendship\, and the mundane moments of humanity that define his songwriting\, Shauf makes music that explores how easy it is to find yourself in familiar patterns and repeat the same mistakes of your past. His characters wonder\, “Did this relationship end too soon? Would going to another bar cheer my friend up?”Or in the case of the foreboding “Living Room\,” where a character asks herself\, “How hard is it to give a shit?” the songs on The Neon Skyline ultimately take solace in accepting that life goes on and things will be okay. Shauf says\, “there’s moments on the album where the characters are thinking ‘this is the end of the world.’ But there are also moments with some clarity and perspective: Nothing is the end of the world.”
